Usage study: electronic cigarette will not increase the risk of taking COVID-19.
2022-01-20
Using electronic cigarettes no longer makes you susceptible to COVID-19 infection. A group of British scientists, mainly from the United States, have been working to refute speculation against e-cigarettes. Now, in order to further clarify, a new study published in the Journal of primary health and community health entitled "the use of electronic cigarettes has nothing to do with COVID-19's diagnosis". It was conducted by five researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, coordinated by Ivana t. croghan. The aim of this work was to test the hypothesis that the use of e-cigarettes is associated with an increased risk of sars-cov-2 infection.
The sample used included nearly 70000 smokers or e-smokers over the age of 12 (69264) who sought help at the Mayo Clinic from September 15, 2019 to November 30, 2020. Therefore, the observation period exceeded one year. In fact, since mid September, doctors have begun to record the current or past use of e-cigarettes as a clinical routine. The average age of the sample was 51.5 years, and more than half (62.1%) were women. 11.1% were smokers or e-smokers, and 5.1% were positive for sars-cov-2.
The results are reassuring. Compared with the general case, the study points out that patients who use only electronic cigarettes are less likely to be diagnosed with COVID-19. In other words, the authors point out again that e-cigarettes "do not seem to increase susceptibility to sars-cov-2 infection". The work also confirms a fact that has emerged since March 2020: smokers have a reduced risk of contracting the disease, while the risk of dual-use is in between. In addition to dispelling doubts about e-cigarettes, the researchers said, the data also showed the hypothesis that "any beneficial effects of traditional smoking on susceptibility are not mediated by nicotine.". The Mayo Clinic will conduct further studies to assess whether the use of electronic cigarettes can mitigate the consequences of COVID-19.
